Holding

Holding-Type Electromagnets mainly function by controlling the electrical current within the windings to rapidly alter the magnetic field. Once energized, the magnetic field concentrates at the center of the core, meaning no magnetic force is generated outside of the core itself. Unlike permanent magnet-type electromagnets that do not require continuous power to hold a position, holding-type electromagnets require a continuous supply of current to maintain their magnetic field; when the current is turned off, the magnetic field vanishes immediately.

 

When energized, these electromagnets generate a powerful holding force. Installing them in automation equipment allows them to stop or move targeted objects. Product applications include fire door release mechanisms, MRI and X-ray bed locking mechanisms, automated distribution lifelines, sorting machinery, clutch assemblies, and other lifting or locking mechanisms. They feature simple control, labor and power efficiency, and high safety and reliability.

Operating Precautions

  • Optimized Contact Surface: It is recommended that the contact surface of the attracted object be as flat and smooth as possible. Additionally, the surface area of the object should not be smaller than the holding surface of the electromagnet.

  • Definition of Holding Force: The holding force refers to the suction generated when the electromagnet is energized after its holding surface has made full, direct contact with the magnetic metal object.

Holding-type electromagnets are frequently utilized as brakes in elevators or parking systems. The holding force can vary based on several factors, including the flatness and smoothness of the contact surface, and even the thickness of the metal plating.
